Non-climate controlled storage units are not heated or
cooled, so your belongings could be subjected to humidity, extreme heat and
freezing temperatures. However, when packed properly, many items will be can
be stored in a non-climate controlled storage unit.
General Storage Tips
- Leave space between items. This will avoid accidental damage
and allow air to flow. Plus, you’ll be able to easily retrieve items as you
need them.
- Consider placing pallets on the floor of your storage unit.
This will help prevent your items from getting damp when the concrete floor heats
and cools.
Furniture
- Apply sheets, blankets or drop cloths to your furnishings
and secure with tape, being careful not to get tape onto the furniture itself.
- To protect from moisture and dust, clean and wax all wood
pieces before wrapping and storing.
- Clean all upholstered furniture to reduce the
possibility of mildew or mold growing. Gently wipe down all surfaces with an
antibacterial cleaner that’s designed for use on fabrics. Allow time for the
cleaner to air dry before moving it to your storage unit.
Electronics
- Store electronics in original packaging if possible.
- Never cover or wrap electronics in plastic as this can trap
moisture and damage your devices.
- Store your electronics near the back of the unit to help
protect from the elements and temperature changes.
Appliances
- Drain all liquid from any hoses, tubing or internal
components to prevent mold or mildew.
- Clean all internal and external surfaces of food or debris
to safeguard against unwanted pests.
- Keep refrigerator or freezer doors ajar to allow airflow.
